Charity

Charity is a compulsory component of Islam and one of the five pillars - (Pillar 1) Belief in the oneness of god ("Tawheed"), (Pillar 2) Prayer ("Salat"), (Pillar 3) Pilgrimage to Mecca ("The Hajj"), (Pillar 4) Fasting during the month of Ramdan ("Sawm"), and (Pillar 5) Concern for and almsgiving to the needy ("Zakat").  Local communities have been donating funds and their time to help those that are less fortunate and need help.  Details of the initiatives that have been launched are provided below.

Feed the Hungry Initiative

Following the commandment in the Holy Quran - "You Will Not Obtain Righteousness Till You Spend in Charity Of The Things You Love" the DC Chapter of MuslimsRUs prepared bagged meals last weekend and delivered them to the local homeless shelter. Next month we plan to meet with our Christian friends, to prepare bagged meals at a church, to deliver to the homeless.

This activity is led primarily by the youth and has been gaining momentum over the last several months, with more families contributing and attending this event.

Micro-Finance Initiative

The local community has been financing entrepreneurs via Kiva.org.  As of September 2015, our team "A Helping Hand" has supported over 1300 loans and has lent over $63,000. Join the team by clicking on this.

We have a lending target of $100,000 by the end of 2016.

Women's Health Initiative

The local communities have donated generously to support a women's health initiative in Hyderabad, India.  The services provided by the clinic are very much needed, due to the lack of proper screening and treatment of women's health issues such as breast, cervical, and ovarian cancer.

The women's health initiative team conducts regular health drives to educate women about health related issues and does preventative treatment.

Those wishing to donate to this noble cause can do so via the India Health Foundation website
